Procedures

Today we discussed why procedures are important and what purpose they serve in a classroom. Share any ideas you have for the types of procedures that might be useful for you to implement during your student teaching experience and/or your future classrooms.

  1. I think student teaching will help me establish procedures for things I don't think I would have normally thought of. I was surprised at all the procedures I saw listed in the Wong book. Some, I hadn't even thought of. On the long comute home, I started thinking about all of the procedures I do in one day. Again, I was amazed. I think i take the procedures for granted. As for procedures to implement when student teaching, I would think the morning procedure would have to be a big one. I want my morning at school to be very smooth. I am sure some of my students may have had a very hectic morning and I want to show them order to help them get into a learning mode instead of in a brain stem mode.

  2. I agree Tracy the morning procedure is very important. It can help set the tone for the entire day. I use to always have kids greet a few friends as part of the morning procedure.

  3. Since I'm student teaching first grade, procedures are going to be a very important part of planning. I've always liked giving procedures because it lets kids know exactly what will happen and how to do things. I think that kids really do feel empowered when they know what is expected. I used to do this when I worked at the daycare and the kids really responded well. There weren't really any procedures that everyone followed... and the procedures that the daycare did have, teachers weren't following them consistently. Each teacher had a different routine and it was really confusing for the kids...and you could tell when you were with them-even the youngest ones! They were uneasy and frustrated when they were with a different teacher. We as adults are also affected by this...we feel uneasy when we don't know what to expect or don't know how to do things. This knowledge can be applied to all areas of our lives.

  4. Procedures are definitly important. I work with kindergarten and 7-10 year olds at the learning center and if we did not have specific procedures, we would not make it through the day. We have special ways to wash our hands, walk through the hall way, and how to get on/off the bus. I think it is important to establish the procedures, but at the same time we need to keep them interesting. I notice sometimes that students get tired of doing the same things over and over again. So it is nice to put a little twist on them so that the children are still following procedure while doing it in a meaningful way.

  5. There is a sense of understanding and a happier classroom atmosphere when kids are operating under procedures. Havign procedures in your classroom allow students to switch topics and move from subject to subject without confussion. The less confussion in your classroom the less anxiety some students will have. Implementing procedures into your classroom helps students to be organized. Like Amanda said sometimes procedures get to be too routine and will need to be spiced up for your students. That is one of my goals when student teaching. If I notice that students are becoming more like robots then I need to switch up the routine. I am not quite sure what procedures I will use when I student teach. However, I believe in using hallway procedures, end of the day, and morning procedures. I am interested in learning how to make procedures fun and not so balh routine.
